5e '24 vs '14 - Class: Warlock

As with all classes, Warlocks now select their patron and subclass (determined by patron selection) at 3rd level. Likewise, subclass-specific spells and features that previously became available at lower levels now come online at 3rd level.

The starting equipment is entirely changed.

Core Class Features

Pact Magic, 1st. Warlocks still gain spell slots and spellcasting at 1st level, and can now change one cantrip when gaining a level.

Eldritch Invocations

The Invocations now become available at 1st level (previously 2nd), and Warlocks gain more of them at each level than before. Some Invocations have their behavior and effects changed, some are removed outright, and some are added. Consult the PHB24 for a full accounting of the new Eldritch Invocations. Additionally, the term Repeatable has been added to some Eldritch Invocations to indicate that they can be employed more than once per turn.

Changed Eldritch Invocations

Agonizing Blast now applies to any cantrip, not just Eldritch Blast.

As with all classes, an Epic Boon unlocks at 19th level.

Subclass Options

Archfey Patron

This subclass now grants one spell that it previously did not. At 3rd level, Misty Step is always prepared.

The Fey Presence feature has been removed.

Steps of the Fey, 3rd, lets you cast Misty Step without a spell slot times equal to your Charisma modifier per Long Rest. This feature further enhances Misty Step with a per-casting choice of:

  • Refreshing Step - self or other within 10’ gain 1d10 Temporary HP
  • Taunting Step - enemies within 5’ of your departure point make a Wisdom saving throw or have Disadvantage on attacks against targets other than you.

Misty Escape, 6th, adds Dreadful Step to Steps of the Fey, forcing a Wisdom saving throw on enemies within 5’ of the Misty Step arrival or departure (your choice of one) to avoid 2d10 Psychic damage.

Beguiling Defenses, 10th, no longer uses a Reaction to turn failed Charm attempts back on the attempter. Instead, now it uses your Reaction after being attacked to reduce the damage by half and force a Wisdom saving throw on the attacker. On a failed saving throw, the attacker takes the same amount of damage just dealt to you as Pyschic damage. This is usable once per Long Rest, and can be restored by expending a spell slot.

The 14th level Dark Delirium is no longer a feature.

Bewitching Magic, 14th, allows the Warlock to cast Misty Step without a spell slot as part of the same Action used to cast an Enchantment or Illusion spell, possibly applying any relevant effects from Steps of the Fey in the process.

Celestial Patron

This subclass originally appeared in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything and has received some modifications.

The Celestial Spells have changed and now only come online at 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th levels.
New spells granted by this subclass:

  • 3rd: Aid
  • 5th: Daylight, Revivify
  • 9th: Summon Celestial

The following spells are no longer granted by this subclass:

  • Flaming Sphere
  • Flame Strike

Celestial Radiance, 10th, now also provides its grant of Temporary Hit Points when using Magical Cunning.

Searing Vengeance, 14th, is now also triggered by an ally within 60 feet making a Death Saving Throw.

Fiend Patron

The Fiend Spells have changed and now only come online at 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th levels.
New spells granted by this subclass:

  • 3rd: Suggestion
  • 9th: Geas, Insect Plague

The following spells are no longer granted by this subclass:

  • Blindness/Deafness
  • Hallow
  • Flame Strike

Dark One’s Blessing, 3rd, is now triggered by anyone within 10’ of you reducing an enemy to 0 HP.

Dark One’s Own Luck, 6th, gains a rate limit of uses equal to Charisma modifier per Long Rest, it was previously one use per Long Rest.

Fiendish Resilience, 10th, grants the option to deal Force damage from spells.

Hurl Through Hell, 14th, gets a slight damage reduction from 10d10 down to 8d10, but the target is Incapacitated on return and the feature’s use can now be restored by expending a spell slot.

Great Old One Patron

Awakened Mind moves from 1st to 3rd level, along with subclass selection, and is now a Bonus Action to use. It also receives a rate limit of Charisma-modifier-uses per Long Rest. Previously, Awakened Mind ignored language limitations but now requires a shared language between the target and the Warlock.

Psychic Spells, 3rd, now lets the Warlock choose for the damage of is spells to be Psychic damage. Additionally, all Enchantment and Illusion spells can be cast without Verbal or Somatic components.

The Great Old One Spells have been changed a bit, with both additions and removals to the always-prepared spell lists.
Spells now granted by this subclass:

  • 5th: *Clairvoyance (previously granted at 3rd, now 5th), Hunger of Hadar
  • 7th: Confusion, Summon Aberration
  • 9th: Modify Memory, Telekinesis

The following spells are no longer granted by this subclass:

  • Sending
  • Dominate Beast
  • Evard’s Black Tentacles
  • Dominate Person

Entropic Ward has been removed.

Clairvoyant Combatant, 6th, makes Awakened Mind combat-relevant by forcing its target to make a Wisdom saving throw to avoid having Disadvantage to attack you and granting you Advantage on attacks against them. This is usable once per Long Rest and can be replenished with a spell slot.

Eldritch Hex, 10th, grants Hex as an always-prepared spell and enhances it to impose Disadvantage on saving throws in the chosen ability, not just ability checks.

Create Thrall, 14th, has been redesigned entirely. The new version enables casting Summon Aberration and choosing to ignore the spell’s Concentration requirements. Doing so reduces the duration of the Summon to 1 minute, but gives the Aberration Temporary Hit Points equal to your Warlock level + Charisma modifier. Additionally, the Aberration’s first attack hit per turn against a target with Hex deals bonus damage equal to the damage done by Hex.
