L
Legend Lore (p. 290)
The text has been changed to expand on the spell’s effect for non-famous subjects, and humorously so.
Leomund’s Secret Chest
The chest is no longer “irretrievably lost” when the spell ends with its subject in the Ethereal Plane and instead simply remains on that plane to be recovered by any who find it.
Leomund’s Tiny Hut
The updated text no longer specifically states that the spell’s Emanation is capable of accommodating up to 9 Medium or smaller creatures. Casting this for only Medium and Small creatures is functionally identical, as that is the number that could fit within a 10-foot Emanation; a greater number of Tiny creatures, and lesser number of Large creatures may also be able to fit. More significantly, the previous version blocked all spells and effects while the updated version only blocks “Spells of level 3 or lower”.
Lesser Restoration
Casting time is a Bonus Action (f. Action).
Levitate
Material components are now “a metal spring” (f. “a small leather loop” or “golden wire bent into a cup…”).
Light
The target object may no longer be held or carried by another creature.
Lightning Arrow
The timing of casting the spell now allows for retroactive casting on either a Ranged attack hit or miss.
Lightning Bolt
The language indicating that the spell ignites flammable objects along its Line is removed.
Locate Creature
No longer blocked by 10 feet of running water, only by “any thickness of lead”.
M
Magic Circle
Material components no longer require holy water or powdered iron, instead requiring salt and only accepting powdered silver.
Magic Mouth
Material components no longer include “a bit of honeycomb”.
Magic Weapon
No longer requires Concentration.
Mass Cure Wounds (p. 296)
Gains an additional 2d8 to its base healing, no change to upcasting to make it 5d8 plus spellcasting modifier, and 1d8 per level of upcast
Mass Healing Word (p. 296)
Gains an additional 1d4 to its base healing, no change to upcasting to make it 2d4 plus spellcasting modifier, and 1d4 per level of upcast
Mass Suggestion
Material components only require “a snake’s tongue”.
Maze
Minotaur and goristro creatures no longer automatically save against this spell.
Meld into Stone
The damage type inflicted by alterations to the surrounding stone is now Force (f. Bludgeoning).
Melf’s Acid Arrow
Material components no longer require “an adder’s stomach”.
Mirror Image
The spell’s operations are unchanged, but only successful attacks trigger a chance to hit one of the duplicates. Additionally, the target-determination roll is now 1d6, rather than 1d20.
Mislead (p. 299)
Switching between the caster’s and the duplicate’s senses no longer has a specified mechanism or action economy.
Moonbeam
Material components are now “a moonseed leaf” (f. moonseed seeds, opalescent feldspar). Shape-shifted creatures - and those capable of shape-shifting - no longer save against the spell at Disadvantage.
Mordenkainen’s Faithful Hound
Material components are now “a silver whistle” (f. “tiny silver whistle, a piece of bone, and a thread”). The distance between the caster and the hound is increased to 300 feet (f. 100 feet) and the hound inflicts Force damage (f. piercing). Additionally, the hound no longer makes an Attack check, instead its target must make a Dexterity saving throw to avoid being damaged.
Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion
Material components are now “a miniature door worth 15+ GP”.
Mordenkainen’s Private Sanctum
Material component requirements for “a piece of opaque glass, a wad of cotton or cloth, and powdered chrysolite” are removed.
Mordenkainen’s Sword
Material components no longer specify the metals comprising the miniature sword. The spell’s damage is now 4d12 + spellcasting ability (f. 3d10).
Move Earth
Material components are now just a shovel (f. iron blade and several types of soils).
O
Otiluke’s Resilient Sphere
Material components are a glass sphere (f. hemispherical pieces of crystal and gum arabic).
Otto’s Irresistible Dance
The target now makes a Wisdom saving throw when the spell is cast in order to avoid being Charmed and suffering deleterious effects.
P
Phantasmal Force
The damage potential is changed to 2d8 from 1d6.
Phantasmal Killer
No longer imposes the Frightened condition, instead imposes Disadvantage on all ability checks and attack rolls (not saving throws) for its duration.
Phantom Steed (p. 304)
The illusory steed now has a defined stat block for a Riding Horse (p. 356).
Plane Shift
The new text makes no mention of a saving throw against this spell’s effects, so the ability to use it against unwilling creatures has been removed.
Poison Spray
Range is extended to 30 feet (f. 10 feet). This is now a ranged spell attack with no saving throw.
Polymorph
The condition that shapechangers automatically save against this spell has been removed.
Power Word Kill
Can now inflict 12d12 Psychic on targets with more than 100 HP.
Power Word Stun
Targets with more than 150 HP are now affected by this spell, dropping their Speed to 0 until the start of the caster’s next turn.
Prayer of Healing
Applies to 5 creatures (f. 6) and no longer add the caster’s spellcasting ability to its healing effect.
Prismatic Spray
All damages are now 12d6 (f. 10d6).
Prismatic Wall
All layer damages are now 12d6 (f. 10d6).
Programmed Illusion
Material components no longer require a bit of fleece.
Protection from Evil and Good
Material component option of powdered silver and iron has been removed.
R
Ray of Enfeeblement
The target now makes a Constitution saving throw against its effects (f. ranged spell attack). The spell’s Strength penalty effect now imposes Disadvantage on the target’s next attack (f. attack at half damage) imposes Disadvantage on all Strength Tests (checks and saves), and reduces the target’s attack damage by 1d8.
Ray of Sickness
No longer allows a saving throw to avoid its effects.
Regenerate
Material components no longer include holy water.
Reincarnate
Moved to the Necromancy school (f. Transmutation). The random selection of a new species uses a 1d10 (f. 1d100) and the results table varies from its previous version. See page 311 of PHB24 for details.
Resistance
No longer has Material components.
Revivify
Moved to the Necromancy school (f. Conjuration).
Rope Trick
Powdered corn extract is removed from the Material components.
##S
Searing Smite
Is now cast retroactively upon a successful Melee or Unarmed Strike attack.
See Invisibility
Material components no longer include powdered silver.
Sending
The target recipient may now choose to block the spell for 8 hours, resulting in a spell failure upon casting.
Shapechange
The caster now gains Temporary HP equal to the chosen from they change into (f. caster’s HP was replaced with the form’s) and the spell ends when the Temp HP reach 0. Excess damage still carries over to the caster’s original form.
Shillelagh
Material components no longer include a shamrock leaf, club, or quarterstaff. Rather than becoming “magical”, the spell allows the damage of its target weapon to become Force or remain unchanged.
Simulacrum
Material components reduced to just “powdered ruby worth 1,500+ GP” (f. many more things than this). The resulting creature is of the Construct type.
Sleep (p. 317)
The area of effect is decreased from “within 20 feet of a point” to a “5-foot-radius Sphere.”
The ascending order HP mechanic has been replaced with a Wisdom saving throw. Failing this saving throw imposes the Incapacitated condition on the affected creature and requires them to make another Wisdom saving throw at the end of their next turn. Upon failing the second saving throw, the creature gains the Unconscious condition for the duration, until the creature takes damage, or a creature within 5 feet of it uses an Action to rouse it.
Creatures automatically succeed on the first saving throw if they do not require sleep (elves), or have Immunity to Exhaustion.
Sleet Storm
Material components are now “a miniature umbrella” (f. “pinch of dust and a few drops of water”).
Spare the Dying (p. 318)
Updated to include the condition that the target be at 0HP and not Dead (emphasis mine). This change specifically excludes the following from this spell’s effects (p. 28):
- Monster death
- Hit Point Maximum of 0
- Massive Damage
- Failed Death Saving Throws
Spirit Guardians
Material components are “a prayer scroll” (f. “a holy symbol”).
Staggering Smite
Is now cast retroactively on a successful Melee or Unarmed Strike attack.
Stinking Cloud
Material components no longer include skunk cabbage leaves.
Storm of Vengeance
The maximum radius of the storm is limited to 300 feet (f. 360 feet). The Acid damage dealt by the Turn 2 effect is 4d6 (f. 1d6).
Suggestion
Material components no longer include a snake’s tongue or sweet oil.
Sunburst
The imposition of Disadvantage against oozes and undead has been removed.
Swift Quiver
Material component now has a GP-valued requirement on the quiver used as part of the casting.
Symbol
Material components no longer include mercury or phosphorous. A Wisdom (Perception) check replaces the Intelligence (Investigation) check to notice the glyph. The Insanity and Hopelessness effects have been removed.
T
Tasha’s Hideous Laughter
The restriction against creatures with Intelligence less than 5 is removed.
Telekinesis
The Creature use mode now calls for a Strength saving throw by the target (f. an opposed check), as is the case of moving an object worn or carried by a creature. Weight limits have been replaced with “Huge or smaller”. The Familiarity table uses different terms, consult pp. 331-332 of PHB24 for details.
Thunderous Smite
Casting is now retroactive on a successful Melee or Unarmed Strike attack.
True Polymorph
The restriction against shapechangers is removed. Changing into creatures adds Temporary HP equal to the new form’s, rather than replacing the HP total.
True Strike
Material components added, must have a weapon worth 1+ CP with which the caster is Proficient. Rather than Advantage on the attack, the spell now adds the caster’s spellcasting ability to the attack (in place of Strength or Dexterity) and may deal Radiant damage if preferred.
V
Vicious Mockery (p. 337)
Targeting conditions now include creatures the caster can see or hear, previously it was only sight-based. The damage die type has been increased from d4 to d6.
W
Wall of Fire
Material components are charcoal (f. phosphorous).
Wall of Force
Material components are “a shard of glass” (f. powder from crushed gemstone).
Weird
Failing its Wisdom saving throw results in 10d10 Psychic in addition to being Frightened. Subsequent saving throw failures inflict 5d10 (f. 4d10) Psychic damage.
Wind Walk
Material components of fire and holy water are replaced with a candle. Failing its Strength saving throw inflicts 4d8 Bludgeoning (f. 3d8) damage.
Witch Bolt
Now inflicts 2d12 Lightning. The caster is now able to perform other actions, as the spell will end if the target leaves its range or has Total Cover (in addition to elective ending or broken Concentration).
Wrathful Smite
Retroactively cast on a successful Melee or Unarmed Strike attack. The damage type is Necrotic (f. Psychic).
