"The Steerswoman" - Rosemary Kirstein

At about 1/5th into this book I wanted to recommend it for being intriguing, engaging, and immensely clever

But that would have meant putting it down long enough to make the recommendation, so now I’m doing it at about 40% in

It seems, at this point, to be a mystery novel in a fantasy setting, with technology creeping in at the margins

Regardless, I’m completely hooked. I think most editions of it have gone out of print, but it seems available in digital from libraries and the Internet Archive (for now, recent judgements though…) and the author has reverted to self-printing and -publishing for her own storefront

No audiobook on this one, I’m afraid

Update: I started the second book (it’s a series!) and it is dang riveting - character development, wide-ranging adventure, concise description, unfamiliar customs - just terrific

I’ve since torn through books 3 and 4 in this series and just kept getting blown away by how deeply-considered the world and cultures are.

Truly cannot say enough good about these books, and I hope beyond hope that the author is able to continue the series through the planned fifth and sixth books
